Florida highways are filled with traffic on a daily basis; all sorts of motor vehicles navigate the roadways, placing everyone at risk for accidents. When a motorist acts in a negligent or reckless manner, the likelihood of an accident increases. In addition to placing himself or herself at risk, a negligent motorist endangers all those sharing the road at the time. As a result, many travelers suffer personal injury when others fail to uphold safety standards and traffic regulations.
Recently, a 68-year-old man was heading north on Interstate 95 in his vehicle when another car apparently hit his vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle was reportedly attempting to change from the center lane of the roadway to the left lane already occupied by the man. The trailing driver, said to be 22 years old, seems to have failed to safely execute the maneuver, striking the rear of the man’s vehicle as he attempted to move in behind it.
Upon impact, the older man lost steering control and his vehicle careened over an embankment. His car hit a tree, spun around and came to a halt, facing south. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a medical center for treatment. The man’s 61-year-old wife, who was riding as a passenger in his car, also suffered injury and was transported to the same location for care.
A serious personal injury suffered in a motor vehicle accident can alter the rest of a person’s life. Many times, ongoing medical care, physical therapy or permanent assisted-living is required for recovery. This type of care can bring undue financial stress upon a surviving victim. Florida law allows someone facing such circumstances to pursue legal action against the person deemed responsible in the accident that resulted in his or her injuries.
