New year, new you! Many people use this motto when reevaluating where they are in their life as the clock strikes midnight onPhysiotherapy 595529 1920 New Year’s Eve. The most common New Year’s resolutions usually have something to do with a healthier lifestyle or even just the goal to get in shape or lose weight. Whatever your health and fitness goals are for 2019, remember to proceed with caution. From taking supplements to working out a gym, there are always potential dangers that you should be cautious of, especially if you are incorporating new products and routines into your life.

If you are setting health and fitness goals in the New Year, here are some safety tips and reminders for your new regimen.

Work with Your Doctor to Set a Plan

Before starting any new health routine, you should see a doctor for a physical exam. As we get older our bodies may not be able to handle the physical strain they once did when we were young. It’s important to know your limits before you engage in a new physical activity or diet plan.

At the Gym

Before joining a gym or working with a trainer, make sure that the gym has insurance and that all trainers have credentials or certifications. It is likely that you will sign a waiver before working out, but you want to make sure that the facility is legitimate and that the people who will be guiding you know what they are doing.

Always take the safety orientation provided by the gym and use the equipment as directed. This is for your safety and the safety of others.

Also, respect your body and its limitations. Be careful about pushing yourself beyond what you can handle. Injuries can take a long time to heal. One day of over-exertion may mean months of recovery.

Health Supplements

Before taking any supplements, it’s best to work with a doctor or nutritionist who can make recommendations based on your personal health. Some medications may be adversely affected by supplement use, so it’s also important to discuss any supplements you take with your doctor.

Supplements may not be as closely monitored by the FDA as prescriptions or other medications at the pharmacy, therefore, it’s important to read all ingredients and directions closely before use. Follow the directions as they are stated.

Furthermore, just because a supplement says “herbal” or “natural” doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have more ingredients in it than the labeling suggests or that those ingredients are safe.

Know What Your Insurance Covers

Check your health insurance. Again, injuries can cost you time and money. What may seem like a small sprain can turn out to be an expensive recovery if not properly treated. Protect yourself, and ensure you have coverage before you work out.

In the event that you are injured by someone else’s negligence at the gym or by using supplements, contact a personal injury attorney who can review your case. At Panter, Panter, & Sampedro, we offer free consultations. Contact us at (305) 662-6178 or visit our website at panterlaw.com.
