Before heading out to the stores or logging on to your favorite online shop, there are a few gifts parents do not want others gifting their children this year. These toys have been recalled, meaning there has been a government-ordered or manufacturer-initiated request for the return of defective toys.
There are many reasons a product may be recalled, but the most common include toys that contain chemicals in their paints or plastics, small pieces that may pose a choking hazard to small children, and materials that may be a fire hazard. The agency that is responsible for toy recalls is The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
After receiving many complaints or investigating a particular product, the CPSC may issue a recall. Companies may take it upon themselves to recall a toy after receiving complaints from consumers or after finding a defect in their product. Also known as a voluntary recall, a company-initiated recall is when a manufacturer and the CPSC worked together to issue a recall for the safety of consumers. Most recalls are voluntary recalls.

Wee Gallery Wooden Tray Puzzle
Due to a choking hazard, Wee Gallery of St. Petersburg, FL issued a recall on approximately 8,000 Ocean and Safari puzzles sold in the United States and Canada. Although no injuries have yet to be reported, the vendor has received complaints of pieces breaking, making them small enough to fit into a child’s mouth. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased this product should look for “Wee Gallery” printed on the right edge of the tray and either “Ocean Animals” or “Safari Animals” printed near the center. Wee Gallery is encouraging purchasers of this product to immediately move the product away from children and contact them. Barhee Fishing Hero
Blue Star Trading of Denver, CO recalled 300 of their Barhee Fishing Hero game due to high levels of lead found in the toy’s metal rollers. Children’s products are prohibited from containing more than 1.06 percent lead (by weight) thanks to a federal ban enacted in 1978. Lead can be toxic if ingested by small children and can compromise their health. Fishing Hero was manufactured in China and sold only on Amazon. The recalled product has a model number of 1577C. Consumers who have purchased this product should immediately take it away from children and contact Blue Star Trading at (917) 300-8128 from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (est) Monday through Friday or by email at 1704411271@qq.com.
Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soother
After four infant deaths, Fisher-Price recalled its 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soother. When infants are left unrestrained, the product may pose a suffocation risk. Fisher-Price is also recalling its 2-in-1 Soothe ‘n Play Glider, but no fatalities have been reported with that product. According to the CPSC, about 120,000 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soothers and 55,000 2-in-1 Soothe ‘n Play Gliders were sold in recent years. Consumers in possession of these products are being asked to immediately contact Fisher Price for a full refund.
Boppy Lounger Pillow
The Boppy Company is recalling eight of its pillow products following the death of eight infants due to suffocation. Working with the CPSC, the Colorado-based company is recalling approximately 3.3 million baby loungers. Products listed in the recall are Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers. Consumers should immediately stop the use of these products and contact the Boppy Company for a refund at 800-416-1355 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (est) Monday through Friday or click “Recall & Safety Alert” at www.boppy.com.
