Sovereign Immunity

Recently I read that Gov. Rick Scott will likely sign a bill into law that extends sovereign immunity to the University of Miami and its doctor. The article said that the university spends $40 million a year on malpractice cases. If Scott signs this bill, the taxpayers will bear the expenses of people who are severely harmed as a result of medical negligence. The university, a private medical school, will be exonerated from being financially responsible for medical negligence and, along with its doctors, will be able to shift the cost of the harm and medical expenses to Medicaid and other governmental agencies.

I believe that there should be less government interference and that private entities such as UM should be held responsible for their actions. To give a private medical school sovereign immunity and allow it to shift its financial responsibility to the public should not be allowed.
