Columbus Day Weekend Deadly Boating Accident In Key Biscayne

On Saturday, Oct. 11, boaters were busy celebrating Columbus Day weekend, a notoriously busy boating weekend in Miami. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, on Saturday evening, Maria Del Valle was aboard a 27-foot boat with several other passengers when it was struck by a 68-foot yacht. The 29-year-old mother of four was first taken to Mercy Hospital and then transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The crash is under investigation and two other people who were on the smaller boat are still hospitalized. None of the 21 passengers on the larger boat were injured.”Unfortunately, boating accidents are not rare, particularly during the night on holiday weekends,” says Mitch Panter, founding partner of Panter, Panter & Sampedro, P.A.”Boaters have a duty to obey water safety practices, including installing proper lighting, following navigation procedures, wearing life jackets, and not drinking and navigating,” continues David Sampedro, partner of Panter, Panter & Sampedro.

“Boating can be a fun and relaxing activity, but it’s also one that comes with a lot of responsibility. Boaters can quickly become liable if they act negligently and an individual aboard their vessel, near their vessel or aboard another vessel is injured as a result of their negligence,” adds Brett Panter, founding partner of Panter, Panter & Sampedro
