Two pit bulls were put down after attacks against two men in Florida. The first incident happened in February. A man was at the home of the owner of the dogs in Lantana servicing the pool when, he said, the dogs tried to kill him. The dogs made no sound until they attacked him and became even more vicious after the worker started to scream for help. The dogs were eventually forced away by the owner, and the worker spent several days in the hospital for surgery and recovery.
A similar attack, by the same two dogs in the same area, occurred in June when a 70-year-old man was taking photos of a vacant lot next door to the dogs’ home. Residents say that the two dogs came over to the lot and attacked the man. The pit bulls continued their attack as neighbors came over with a shovel to ward off the dogs. The animals eventually retreated.
Like the first victim, the 70-year-old suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control said authorities did not follow through with the case involving the man in the first attack because he chose not to fill out a witness statement.
An attorney who is familiar with premises liability laws could assist after someone suffers a dog bite on another’s property. These laws regulate the responsibilities of landowners and tenants when someone enters their property and gets hurt due to a dangerous condition. An injured victim may be able to file a lawsuit against the parties that own or control the property.
