As a motorcyclist, your worst nightmare is getting hit by a driver who isn’t paying attention or doesn’t see you. It’s true that motorcycles can be harder to see, and some accidents very well may be just that; however, many times, it’s negligence that leads to injuries and deaths. In this case out of Rockledge, Florida, an accident took the life of a motorcyclist.
Although the man in this accident was wearing protective gear, including a helmet, that wasn’t enough to prevent fatal injuries. The impact to a motorcyclist, even when they are not traveling at high speeds, can be devastating to the body. Add to that the fact that motorcyclists are thrown from their vehicle at speed, and you can understand why their injuries are so severe or even fatal.
According to this story, the motorcycle-car crash took place at around 3 p.m. on U.S. Highway 1, the same highway where several other motorcycle accidents have taken place recently. The 50-year-old motorcyclist had been traveling on the highway north of the Peddler’s Village shopping area when an 81-year-old woman driving a sedan pulled out in front of him to make a left-hand turn. There was no indication that the motorcyclist was speeding or driving inappropriately at the time of the crash.
After striking the motorcyclist, the woman stopped at the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol indicated that a First Flight medical helicopter did come to the scene to collect a patient. The motorcyclist had been thrown from his bike and died. The police did not say if the elderly woman was injured in the crash, but they have stated that charges are pending in this accident.
