Reckless driving has claimed the lives of several people, now including a well-known Miami DJ. DJ SonicC was an occupant of a vehicle that was hit head-on by a 19-year-old young man driving an SUV. The man drifted into oncoming traffic, hitting and killing the local DJ and his friend. The driver of the SUV and three others were injured. The driver’s sister was also killed in the crash.
The fatal car accident occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 19 on Krome Avenue when the SUV hit a Chevy Cavalier. Both vehicles caught fire due to the impact. The driver of the SUV suffered multiple injuries, including broken arms, in the accident. His other sister and two cousins were also injured and are receiving medical treatment. It is unknown if the SUV driver will face any charges for causing the crash.
The cause of the accident is likely still being investigated. Alcohol or drugs could have been involved. Was the man distracted by his passengers or was he texting or talking on a phone? He could have also been speeding and lost control, considering that the impact to the vehicles was so great that they became engulfed in flames.
This is an unfortunate situation for all those involved. It shows that a small error – such as drifting into another lane – can cause catastrophic injuries or even death. The negligent driver could now face charges for vehicular homicide or manslaughter. These charges can include such penalties as license suspension and prison time. He could also face wrongful death lawsuits from the victims’ family members. This means he could be forced to pay compensation for funeral expenses, future lost wages and other damages.
